Let us tell you a story.
In 1985 Japan, two hall-of-fame directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata settled on an Italian word for the name of their new animation studio. The word was ‘Ghibli’, which is in fact not Italian in origin at all. Instead, it comes from Libyan Arabic, and literally means a hot desert wind.
The intention of the directors was to ‘blow a new wind through the anime industry’ with heartfelt, visually-delightful animated stories unlike ever before. And blow it did – quite magnificently!
Spirited Away. My Neighbour Totoro. Castle in the Sky.
Grave of the Fireflies. Kiki’s Delivery Service. Princess Mononoke…
